The below piece was originally intended to be a letter response to an article published on IOL. But after a month of no reply, it is clear that IOL has no intention to publish this piece to balance its overt bias in the Israel-Hamas conflict. So that the information within the article does not go to waste, it has been published here.
I hope that Abbey Makoe’s article (When the younger generation discover their mission, no force can stop them, 5 May 2024) is wrong in its assertion that the ignorant youth will not stop in their tirades and blind crusade against Israel.
Makoe accuses the United States’ foreign policy of being blind. Far from it. Rather, it is pro-Palestine university protesters who have proven themselves blind to the facts, history and justice. While the US has supported Israel in limited amounts, its support is perfectly consistent with its moral duty to defend an embattled state, and its own strategic interests.
Anti-Israel protesters, however, are not free thinkers empowered by social media, as Makoe would have us believe. Rather, they are victims of well-funded and sophisticated propaganda machines that push misinformation over social media to deceive the youth into fanatically taking a side in a conflict they understand nothing about.
Israel is not committing genocide. The ICJ came to that conclusion, and the IDF actively trying to minimise civilian casualties is indisputable. The death toll is also dubious, with the only source being Hamas’ own Ministry of Health, which famously fabricated the death toll at Al-Alhi hospital and has delivered mathematically improbable death tolls since day one.
Anti-Israel protests were also rampant from before Israel even retaliated. Israelis were still reeling from the deaths and rapes of their loved ones when anti-Israel protests flared up across the globe.
These protesters don’t care about the facts. They don’t understand the conflict, or its history. They are being manipulated by pundits, deceived by misinformation on social media, and lied to by their teachers and professors.
We must hope that these youthful protesters stop. Because their cause is unjust and founded in ignorance, and often malice. The sooner they wise up, the better.

Well said but still much too nice towards the manipulators. It is the radical left nihilistic hate against everything what resembles order. And moist of the left, beginning with Karl Marx was always “jew-baiting”. The irony – especially in Germany – is, that after decades of Anti-Nazi and Holocaust propaganda you cannot see any effect. “The current thing” is despising Israel & Jew-baiting and therefore it is done. That most of those protesters do not even know which river is meant and which sea does not surprise. Two years ago; “I stand with Ukraine” came from a lot of people who would not have found u on the map. The lower the hard knowledge the louder the mouth.
